Honorable Mention To Have the House with People in It M. Kathryn Black Gray shingles on a Cape Cod house and two large windows facing north where light is even, pure for painting true. The place still stands, I know, because the people do; they eat and sleep within those walls, go in and out the doors, send plumes of smoke up. I get reports from time to time. If I returned the place would be an artifact, a kind of waking dream that was as solid as the high brick chimney in the cathedral living room-- a slab of wood for a mantle where small art objects had a home. That's where I'd stand, fingering the shells and seaglass, trying to avoid the eyes avoiding mine. Someday I will be standing in that spot, and I hope that there'll be eyes to avoid, to peek at once again despite the heavy years that have changed us. I hope to see the crowning locks of gray surround my parent's faces while they sit and tell me family news. So much better this would be than to have fading memories of what they looked like when they were younger.
